Bengaluru, NFAPost: A Canadian research team has discovered around 13 strains of Cannabis Sativa which are more effective in preventing and treating Covid-19 than the hydroxychloroquine.
It is learnt from recent studies that hydroxychloroquine, a drug made to treat malaria, has fatal drug-induced side-effects like higher mortality rate and potentially fatal heart problems, including heart arrhythmias.
The US President Donald Trump, however, has confidently endorsed the use of hydroxychloroquine as an effective drug for a prophylactic treatment of Covid-19. Trump has recently admitted to the reporters and the US public that he has been taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventive measure against Covid-19.
This comes as a big surprise given the drug’s dangerous side-effects that could kill more people than the Covid-19 itself. Nevertheless, Trump’s association with hydroxychroloquine is reportedly linked to his small financial stake in Plaquenil – a brand name for the infamous drug.
Cannabis Sativa Found Effective in Covid-19 Treatment and Its Prevention
The hunt for a viable drug or vaccine for Covid-19 prevention and treatment without any fatal side-effects has not yielded any positive result till now. However, the government-sponsored research project from Canada has given a big hope in the form of Cannabis Sativa.
The Canadian team of researchers have drawn some interesting insights during their test trials with artificial human 3D models as outlined below:
“We have developed over 800 new Cannabis sativa lines and extracts and hypothesized that high-CBD C. sativa extracts may be used to modulate ACE2 expression in COVID-19 target tissues. Screening C. sativa extracts using artificial human 3D models of oral, airway, and intestinal tissues, we identified 13 high CBD C. sativa extracts that modulate ACE2 gene expression and ACE2 protein levels. Our initial data suggest that some Cannabis sativa extract down-regulate serine protease TMPRSS2, another critical protein required for SARS-CoV2 entry into host cells.”
The research confirms that a handful of Cannabis Sativa strains could potentially inhibit the growth of SARS-CoV2 virus by blocking the human receptor cells and thereby preventing the viral DNA from attaching itself to the host’s healthy cells to cause Covid-19 disease.
There is no word on how to identify the specific strains of Cannabis Sativa that can be effective in Covid-19 treatment as they are not yet available for over-the-counter purchases. Licensing the commercial use of Cannabis Sativa is limited by the local administrative policies and hence its availability could vary from one country to another.
According to Washington Post, Harvard Medical School Professor Mandeep Mehra has conducted a recent study of more than 96,000 Covid-19 patients with 15,000 of them being treated with hydroxychrloroquine. The study has concluded that those who consumed the drug were at higher risk of mortality than others.
Hydroxychloroquine and High Mortality Risk
“For those given hydroxychloroquine, there was a 34 percent increase in risk of mortality and a 137 percent increased risk of a serious heart arrhythmias. For those receiving hydroxychloroquine and an antibiotic — the cocktail endorsed by Trump — there was a 45 percent increased risk of death and a 411 percent increased risk of serious heart arrhythmias.
“Those given chloroquine had a 37 percent increased risk of death and a 256 percent increased risk of serious heart arrhythmias. For those taking chloroquine and an antibiotic, there was a 37 percent increased risk of death and a 301 percent increased risk of serious heart arrhythmias.”
Given the mortality results of the study, it is clear that Cannabis is a better remedy than hydroxycloroquine to treat Covid-19. Cannabis has already found its effective use in treatment of several viral infections and cancer cases.
